Frequently Asked Questions

What is Pink Triangle Youth?
Pink Triangle Youth, or PTY for short, is a support/social group for gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, two-spirit and queer (GLBTTQ) youth under 25 in the Ottawa area. What’s unique about PTY is that it is a peer-led group: i.e. for youth, by youth. In addition, there are two trained counselors available to offer anonymous one-to-one or group counseling services.

What do people do here?
We’re a pretty relaxed group. We begin our meetings with a short welcome, followed by a Name Game. Here, we introduce ourselves, and answer a “ridiculous” question (e.g. “What is your favorite candy and why?”) to break the ice. Next, we have Announcements, where we share information and news about what’s going on in the GLBTTQ communities. After this, we have Positives and Negatives, where everyone shares about any good or bad things that have happened to them over the past week.

There is a short break (5-10 minutes) where people may socialize. If you are a newcomer, approach one of our team leaders for more information or a tour of PTS.

After the break, there is usually a discussion, social night or movie screening. Discussions are centered around what the participants have indicated they want to explore. Topics include: coming out, romantic relationships, relationships with parents and sexuality, to name a few. Discussions are casual, and people participate as much as they like. Social nights may include games, talent shows, and Bring-a-Big-Kid-Night (where youth are encouraged to bring a teacher/parents/sibling/friend for a ‘show-and-tell’ about PTY). Movie nights are when we watch GLBTTQ-themed films that participants have indicated they would like to see.

What kind of people go?
All kids of people go. People like you. GLBTTQ people come in all sizes, backgrounds, and personalities.

I’m kind of nervous at the thought of going. Is that normal?
If you’re nervous about attending one of our meetings, don’t worry! Of course it’s normal! Many participants have felt this way, especially if they came when they weren’t ‘out’ to anyone. If you’d like, bring a friend along. We’d love to see you!
